First (semi) studio shot

We had a workshop evening at our photographic society this week and the main subject was small studio work. I was very egar to try this out as I'd love to do more work with portraits. I've tryed my hand at on camera flash (some of my work is on here somewhere) and now the studio work....

Is the semi burntout effect good? Does it make the pic look any better? I think it makes her look more sweet and angelic... what say you?

wow. no 1 , i love. the second one , not so sure about the pose/expression (maybe its the wrinkled neck thing) , but i like the effect.

I like them both
but something about #1 makes it the better of the two, but only just
good lighting
