Hi all.

I just recently made the step up to a digital SLR. I had a film SLR for college a while back, but haven't been using it too much recently. However, now that I've got myself a digital, I'm determined to make the most of it!

My current kit is a Canon 30D, with a 28-90mm f4-5.6 and a 90-300mm f4.5-5.6

So, I'm going down to some stables with 1 of my colleagues either this weekend or next, and was hoping to do some shots. I want to do a bit of variation, so was looking at doing some portrait-esque shots of her and the horse, as well as action shots of jumps etc.

I know this is probably daft to ask (but hey, why not!), any advice? :)

For the action shots I would use Av mode with the lowest f number your lens is capable of and then adjust the ISO up so that you get a fast enough shutter speed.
I would also look at other horse action shots on here to get an idea of what you want to capture. Then work out the positioning that you would need to emulate them.
Then finally hope for a bright sunny day and enjoy.

Good luck and let us know how you get on

make sure your using the AI Servo mode or it will lock focus and not follow the horse. might be worth trying not to put the ISO too high, you will want a shutter speed around the same as your focal length... so 300mm = 1/300 s should give you a steady image if you have a mono pod use it, and dont forget to try and focus on the eyes for the portraits.
