I decided to try capturing the moon. The night was fairly clear so I braved the cold and ventured out in the back garden.

CC is greatly appreciated. remember I am a beginner so and advice appreciated

Taken on Tripod using Nikon D7100 with Nikon 70-300 lens (non vr type)

For my first attempt I am pretty happy with how it turned out

I like that - it certainly seems sharper than the ones I've tried doing, I'll probably have another go when the temperatures get a bit higher.

A Very good 1st attempt, much better than mine. I will have to revisit photographing the moon once we have settled in after moving. I think some of my photo gear has ended up in the loft. :-(

Tricky thing is a nearly full moon.
I think it looks blown out in the bottom right quadrant.
I find it works best when you bracket the exposure, also the seeing conditions change constantly even on a clear night. I also find my pictures are clearer the higher the moon is in the sky (less atmospheric distortion).
Try again when the moon is half or quarter lit and concentrate on the line separating the light from the dark and take many exposures then compare each one (bracketed as well) and you'll be surprised at the differences in each.
