Flash interferes with my hearing aid

Since having a hearing aid fitted in April I have noticed that my flash gun interferes really badly with my hearing aid. I can hear the whine when it heats up and then I get a loud click when the flash fires. This is beginning to wear my patience very thin! Has anyone else had this problem? If so was there anything you could do to resolve it? I'm happy to go out and buy a new flash gun if it means the interference goes away. I currently have the 420ex. Thanks in advance as any help with this would be much appreciated..
 
Had hearing aids for last 30 yrs, old nhs type and currently using top of the range digital aids I bought. I find with some other digital devices like digital phones I get a buzzing, sometimes in the car I hear a loud click which I've still not discovered the source, I thought it was the brake lights. Being close to flourescent lights/lamps can cause interference. The whining I get when on the local bus, it is like the gearbox winding up as the bus speeds up, I assume its from the engine. Can you try placing the flash away from the camera and remotely activating it. I think it is probably something to do with the led's on the flash. I've learnt to live with these minor annoyances

Do you mind me asking, how do you find the digital aids compared with the NHS ones?

I've never noticed any other interference with anything else other than my flash gun, I could try remotely triggering the flash but wouldn't be ideal in all situations so was hoping to find one that didn't interfere at all.

I suppose after time I will just get used to it but if there's a flash out there that doesn't interfere then I won't have to.

I use digital aids and have never had any problems when using my 580 flash units. Don't hear a thing from the flash - no whine, no clicks - nothing. I suspect it's a fault with the aids, though how you'd get it checked is beyond me because I suspect the manufacturers won't want to know!

Hi Sarah

What aids are you using (Make / Model) - I presume they're NHS from Somerset area ?

Best advice I would give a patient who complained of this or something similar is to make an appointment, come in with your flash gun and let us hear it, I'd then get another new set out, programme these up and see if these did the same, this would tell us if it's a fault with the aid...I'd then look at fine tuning the aids to see if we could eliminate the interference, without disrupting speech intelligibility.

I suspect the amplifier in the hearing aid is picking up electrical pulse of the flash when it fires. Amplifiers normally have a filter to cover a certain frequency range, and if the filter breaks down it becomes susceptible to noise from other frequency ranges. The flash will also have filters to prevent it from producing noise outside a set frequency. This is classed as electro magnetic compatability. All electronic devices must be emc compliant... Hope that's not gone over everyone's head!
