perhaps its because im new but i always feel id rather a quick lens than a flash, this is possibly because i cant use a flash properly but also because most of the pictures i take in low light a flash would just distract the subject. is it just a personal take on them or am i missing the point?

I think its personal choise and subject depent, i ahve only recently started to use a flash and i am not finding it at all easy.

There is no lens fast enough if the area your shooing is too dark. A flash opens up all ne realms of fun and it's not that hard to master.

a fast lens without flash so often means fully open lens and all its poor resolution

ah very good points! i suppose i havent yet found myself in a position where i couldnt shoot unless i had a flash but the wide open comment is def relevant. Hmm so ahem can someone direct me towards useful tutorials?

So learn!

yes, thank you

I think many of us who use this forum would welcome a tutorial on flash.

Have a look at Strobist.

Have a look at lighting 101.

Welcome to the world of flash photography :)

You can get very creative with it or you can use it on ETTL for fill flash etc.

Go and explore the possibilities and see where it takes you :)

thanks ali, constructive, helpful and gentle-an ideal poster :D

I found the onelight dvd was ace for flash. Shutter speed controls ambient light, aperture controls flash! :p

Fast lens choice and flashes are two totally different things. With a fast lens you can shoot in lower light, but lose some resolution and would still need some sort of fill light in really low light. Flashes can be used creatively, you can get a million different styles of picture just by using your flash units in an imaginative way. It depends on what you are shooting basically. If you know there is going to be a decent enough light source, you may just get away with a fast lens, but flashes are the saviour of dark rooms:LOL:

I have found learning about flashes frustrating but at times easy.

The easy times are when you actually have the flash there and you are taking pictures of something, trying to read it all without actually having a flash to use is very frustrating.

I have found printing tutorials off the web has helped, do you really want to spend all your spare time hunched over the screen reading, I don't that's why I print.

I have found that flash work is subjective and the best blogs I have used are the following as they all use slightly different techniques.

The Strobist is a great grounding and it is worth reading 101
