Reading a few articles I have noticed that more pro's seem to be using fluid heads one such example being the Sachtler DV8 especially when it comes to long lenses.

Does anyone use a fluid head and what (if any) advantages would it offer over say your normal ball head?

All the best,

Mark

I take it no one has used a fluid head then. I've been asking around and it would seem that a fluid head may be more suited for the type of wildlife bird shot photography I am doing due to the way you can track over an 'arc' depending on the bird flight pathway.

Only question is is which one to get - I may post up some results once I decide which one to go for.

I see no trend towards fluid heads. They're for video. And you can't turn the camera vertically very easily.

Most serious wildlife photographers use a gimbal for long lenses. Very good support and the movement you're looking for, plus when you let go of the camera (for the three hours between each shot ;) ) the camera doesn't move.

Wimberley is the best known brand, but there are lots of excellent copies out there, and much cheaper.

These Wimberley copies sound interesting - but is the build quality and sturdiness really comparable to the Wimberly? I hear lots of times that 'copy' gitzo tripods are just as good but then you end up disappointed that they are not as rigid/long lasting as an original gitzo.

Several folks on here have got one of these Benro gimbals http://stores.ebay.com/DCs-Photogra...03534018&_sid=896782438&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322 Recommended ebay supplier

Benro are as good as Wimberley or Gitzo IMHO. I have one of their tripods and heads, and have bought several times from that supplier. Fast delivery and no duty to pay (so far!). You can also buy Benro through the official UK importers but it's a lot more expensive.
