Focus assist lamp not working

Guys, my 40D and 24-105 F4 L just don't like focussing in poor light, and I've noticed that the assist lamp doesn't fire :thinking:

I've got it turned on, but no go.

Can anyone :help:

Ah, funny you should say that :D

I was presuming it had a built in lamp (IE not the flash!!)
I've been in a few low light situations lately where I don't want to use the flash, and it hunts allot,and eventually I have to give up.

Anyway, I've just RTFM and it explained all!!!!
Apart from the fact the 40D isn't great at AF in low light. Or is it just me??!!

Sod it, I'm going Pentax :D:D:D

I can thoroughly recommend Nikon if you're interested:naughty:
 
Seriously though, is the 40D really bad at AF in low light, or am I doing something wrong?

Just been trying to shoot Ruby ( :lol: )
and it just hunts and hunts, and I miss 99% of shots........

Blimey, no AF assist unless you pop the flash? That's primitive - even the NIKON D80 has that! :lol::lol:

Yup, you do have to not be in AI Focus for it to work.... just reading this thread from the top and that instantly popped into my mind.

Don't worry, it confused the hell outta me on my 30D the same a few years ago!
 
So let me just get this right,
the 430EX focus assist lamp will still fire, even though it's not turned on?

'Cos mine isn't!!
