i looking to get some opinions/advice on what shutter speed can generally be used to freeze human movement, like people talking, moving casually, gesturing etc..

I know I can learn this myself through trial and error, but other peoples views would be good. It will help me a lot, knowing what type of speed I should try to achieve with my ISO pumped up and aperture wide open (in low light).

Every situation will be different - but 1/125th should freeze most things you're talking about.

Talking and moving casually - even down to 60th depending on how close you are to the subject - movement relative to distance and all that - an object twice as distant appears to cross the field of view slower than when close-up etc etc...

Like he ^ says: depends on the subject really...and how much light you have available - usually, as long as the eyes are sharp, some subject movement (blurring) is acceptable and can even enhance the mood of an image...

I got these with a shutter speed of 1/125:

Or use flash to freeze motion in poor light.

i dont think there is an upper limit so dont be afraid to open up and go faster
the subject jumps out at you then with the smaller dof
panning can help if the subject is moving in a predictable way and speed...as in track events etc
you cant tell really if photo was taken tooooo fast
but you can if its tooooo slow
