Hi Everyone,
Have searched through previous posts but cannot find definitive answer to my issue, so any help/guidance will be much appreciated.
In brief - purchased a (new) 50D about 4 months ago and haven't yet used it very much. Earlier this week, I purchased a 50mm 1.8 ahead of a family wedding & decided it would be sensible to check autofocus etc and generally try to become familiar with using a prime lens before the big day.
Have carried out numerous tests today (focus chart @ 45% and lining up DVD cases at off-set distances etc), & find that my 50mm seems to be front focussing by about 3 to 4 cm at around 1m distance (camera to target). Interestingly, I then tried my Tamron 17-50 and at 50mm; similar sort of results (difficult to be precise on the actual figures though - was shooting the 50mm @ 1.8 and the Tamron @ 2.8!) Had initially thought about asking for the Canon 50mm to be exchanged, but with similar results from my Tamron, I'm not sure that this would help me very much.
I know that I can micro-adjust on the 50D but having no previous experience of "MA", could I please ask for any views on the following points;
1) Would re-calibration of the camera body be the best option given the above?
2) or would it be more sensible to just get on with Micro Adjusting one or both of the lenses? If yes to this, should I "MA" each lens separately or do a "global" adjustment for all lenses?
Also, I think that I have read some previous comments (can't remember where) that there are potential issues when trying to "MA" a zoom lens. Can you actually set (one) micro adjustment for a zoom and it be effective across the full zoom range?
3) I know that the 50D provides micro adjustments of +/- 20 but I haven't got a clue whether this sort of range would resolve front focussing of 3/4cm at a shooting distance of 1m.
