Hey all
Does anyone have multiple domains on 1and1? I have purchased an additional domain and want to create an entirely new website on it. But within the CP for it I can only edit its homedirectory to be /. which is the original website - smoothedit.com/.

Whenever I create folders via ftp they are always subdomains to the smoothedit.com. How do you access 1 level up from that?

Thank you in advance

you should be able to see the www root folder and within this would be the both domains if I recall from when I last used my ftp?

Nope - my top level navigation once connected to FTP is /.

:( Thanks for any assistance you can offer Paul.

I havent got my ftp set up on my laptop but when I get a minute I will fire up the iMac and have a mooch to see if I can jog my memory

yep - got my second domain pointed to www.smooth***.com and can access via ftp. Reading it could be dns needing redirecting?

Thanks for your assistance!

Right I have logged into my main ftp account and as you can see below I have a few options available.
Within the Public HTML folder I have a sub folder for my second domain and thats where I put the site, works fine.
So one thing to check is that you are using the main ftp account which has access to all parent level folders. Im no expert by the way, I just muddle my way through which doesnt always work mind but hey its all the fun trying!

Hmmm I dont have a public_html file at all - my other site works fine though...

Argh head=hurts!

And I fully appreciate where you are coming from with the try it and see! It is my most tried and tested method - just on this occasion thought I would chip in to the expertise of TP!

Yeah I have no doubt your site works fine but maybe the issue is that when you log in the ftp is pointing only to the domain folder and not the root folder. I seem to recall having varying ftp accounts available to me to use which will only allow access to certain things.

Just a thought like....

:( for me I only have one ftp account but when you log in to the FTP one of the required fields is the 'server' - here I put in the domain eg smoothedit.com or smooth***.com
Using either one delivers me to the same 'area' though.

Do you have a control panel you can log into at 1and1?
I use Justhost.com and when log into the control panel I have an option for FTP. Below is the list of user account types and as you can see there are varying levels. If I didnt log in using the main account I would not get access to all levels.

/home/
All directories are relative to your home directory which is /home/macphot1

Log Access
Log access accounts allow you to download your website's raw access logs.

Main Account
Your main account gives FTP access to all files in your web hosting account.

Sub Account
Sub accounts provide ftp access to the user's specific directory and all sub directories within that directory.

Anonymous User
Anonymous ftp users allow anonymous ftp connections to your site. Anonymous FTP Access is controlled through Setup Anonymous FTP Access in the FTP Manager. The existance of an anonymous ftp account does not mean that anonymous access is enable

And if that doesnt work then in the words of mr Bannatyne.....im out!
Will need an FTP expert to come and save you from your woes im afraid matey

You are absolutely spot on Paul - thank you so much for your help and Laurie for the spot on link.

Turns out I was doing it all ok - thanks to your help, but my 'beginner' package did not have the correct features to support the new software I was putting on and so was met by a 'page not found'! Argh!!!

Upgraded now.

Thanks Guys  - just the genuis knowledge I was after.

usually you have to create these from the control panel, not by adding a folder in FTP. on top of that, you often have to wait for the ISP to sort the DNS out, and depending on the set up, for it to propagate

LOL. I missed this thread. Glad you got it sorted.

Cheers KayJay - 1and1 unsurprisingly needed more gold pennies to let me run a database on my website.

Thanks for stopping by matey.
