Full Frame Question - Someone Must Know?

Hi all..

Well, now I'm baffled... I recently upgraded to full frame (D3 + 24-70) I was test shooting portraits in a studio environment (bowens etc etc)...

When I look through the viewfinder, composing and use the whole frame. Then view the image on the computer (tethered) I have "extra" area on the top of the image which wasn't there when I composed. So it feels that the viewfinder wasn't capturing 100% of the frame? Does this make sense?

Is this an Fx/Dx issue?

I was shooting with a D3 and 24-70mm Fx mode?

Ed :)

the viewfinder is probably only 95(ish)% of the frame mate.. you will always have a little extra..

a D3 viewfinder shows exactly 100% of the frame - no more no less - so that isn't the problem.

D700 is 95% and D3 is 100%

I thought exactly the same which is why I am baffled by this? To me when I was shooting I was a tad frustrated, thinking I'm sure I used the whole area of the viewfinder?

The D2x seemed fine..

Thank you all for your help so far...

just stating the obvious here really but your d3 has 3 options of crop make sure your at 36x24 (full frame) other that this il be honest im stumped!
not tried to use mine tethered yet .

Yes that's what it's been set at 36x24..

I know there is a + - on the side of the viewfinder but I'm sure that's the diopter (spelling) like it is on my D2x.

As for Tethered, camera control pro 2 - brilliant! Okay I don't have the wireless add on but an extension cable is no issue for me :)

Are you happy it's 100% when you're not shooting tethered?

I am not near the top of the learning curve with my D700 yet and this may be way out.
Is there not a menu setting for using DX lenses and if DX is selected when a FX lens is on the camera it may produce the effect you mention.

I'll not be using any DX lenses on my D700 so did not study that part of the manual.
Hope this helps.

I noticed it when I was capturing an act on stage too, that to the eye you get about 1cm extra of "negative space". so it's captured more than is should have?

arclight - it's set on fx mode as far as I know, but I'll double check, although with a dx crop it will only be shooting 5mp which is something I'd probably notice maybe but will check again, just in case.

It can be set on 'auto DX' - can't remember exactly what Nikon call it - and it will go into DX mode if a DX lens is fitted. That would NOT give you the effect you experienced though - it just crops the picture so you still get what you saw in the cropped viewfinder.

Presumably you are putting your eye right up against the viewfinder? I can't think of anything else at the moment.

You wouldn't notice any drop in quality in DX mode - unless you make a large print. 5mp on a D3 is still pretty good!
