Full frame v Crop

After reading another thread in the Talk Equipment section I started thinking about the gains expected from using a full frame camera.

I use a D300s and have been really pleased with the results. The next step up in the Nikon range for me is the D700, a full frame camera. So far I've resisted the change due to my main subject being birds, wildlife and the extra distance I get from the D300s crop factor.

Can any of the D700 owners tell me what improvement I can expect from the D700 body, image quality or otherwise and would the improvements offset the loss of the crop factor?

Cheers
Mike

You might also want to consider DOF issues too when you use long glass... can be a proper pain in the bum.

In my book FX is great for up close stuff like portraits, but crop remains the winner for sports, ideally about 1.3x is pretty much perfect - about half way between DX and FX.

Give me a 1.3x crop Nikon and I will be happy :)

My advice: don't get sucked into "you suck unless you are shooting FX", which seems to be the dominant opinion on photography forums lately.

Thanks for the help.

I don't view the D700 and D300s as being competitors. They are cameras that compliment each other and both provide excellent IQ.
The D300s is my camera of choice for telephoto work because of the extra reach.
The D700 has better high ISO/low light performance. Whilst I have no means to accurately measure it, I have the impression that the D700 autofocus is a little faster.

I'm a D700 owner. I shoot mostly horses and people. For me it's perfect. I'd reckon that for wildlife, birds and motorsport the requirement is for reach. A lot of great shots of these subjects are from crop bodies. I can't see you needing to go FF.

I agree with Trevor, I just got a D300s as i cant see anything coming out that will offer the reach of the crop sensor and you can get some stunning shots on a crop as well :)

Thanks again for all the help, really appreciated.

Mike I still have my D300, it is usually hanging off a 500mm lens, I have the funds available to buy another body, only problem is Nikon have not made it yet :D

I can see no advantage for what I shoot, reach is important and outweighs the FX gains.

I agree that a 1.3x crop sensor would be great

Wonder which smart Alec will point out that Canon conveniently has a 1.3x crop body in its line-up..... oops!! :D
