I was actually photographing another insect and came across this:

The little thing in 2 and 3 is a ichneumon wasp and the weapon is its ovipositor, it lays its eggs in host victims and the young just hatch and eat their way out.

Thanks for the ID Alby. Is the last bug an 'Empis' or a 'robber-fly'? I think it looks more like the 'Empis Tessellata'.
