Hello,

My budget is about GBP 400, and I'm looking for a lens for general use, walkabout photography, etc.

I'm leaning towards the 16-85mm Nikkor, but I was wondering if anyone could recommend anything superior to the 18-55/18-105 kit lenses. I don't mind spending a little bit more.

Thank you.

PS - Other brands welcome.

I have been having a similar dilemma for my D80 and have gone for the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 @ ~£360 and am currently awaiting delivery of it from Jessops

My reasoning being
1. I couldn't afford the 24-70 F2.8 nikon
2. Having tried both the Tamron & sigma 24-70 f2.8 at Focus, I couldn't justify the extra £300 for the Sigma
3. I want to buy a few other bits
4. having a Nikon 80-400 as well I think that I have covered the longer range adequately
5. Having gone through a selection of old photos using the kit lens (18-135) I haven't used below 25mm much.

Just my few thoughts
Chris

I have bought the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 Di recently and it is a fantastic lens for the money. I got mine from One Stop Digital in two days for just under £300 with a 7yr warranty.

Have a look at my flickr for some examples.
