So I'm thinking about adding the Nikon 85mm 1.8 to the arsenal.. what do you guys think? I seems it may just boost the potential I have as far as portraits go. Any improvements I can make in that area is welcome and this lens seems highly recommended.

You can see what I have already so given that, is it worth the £200 to get this one.. or will it not get enough use?! Today I even wondered if it could replace the 50mm 1.8 but i've always said i'd never sell that one!!!

Have you thought about the 80-200 F2.8? It covers the same length (plus others) for just over a stop smaller aperture. I guess the 85mm F1.4 is not on budget, and the 70-200 (with incredible bokeh) also outside, but maybe a secondhand 80-200 would be a more flexible purchase?

Have a look at my gear list below my post mate, cheers for replying though.

do you find your 50mm to wide? if yes, then get the 85, if not stick with the fifty. but im sure someone whos got both will give some better advice soon

I'm thinking the distance to subject factor might help with certain people... you notice people become less and less self conscious the further away you get. Of course.. there is a limit!

Ah, never saw that! In that case I think the 85 1.8 won't add anything except smaller size/weight, and a slightly better low light capability. The 70-200 covers the same focal length, much more versatile, and better bokeh.

If you'd like an 85mm, I'd suggest waiting and getting the F1.4. I own the 1.4 and have tried a friend's 1.8, and my preference is very much for the 1.4, despite the price. I also own the 70-200, and would use that for the 85mm distance rather than the 85/1.8. The only caveat would be if it was street photography, and I didn't want a hulking great 70-200 advertising my presence!

And now after a year or so.. I'm upgrading :) It was a great lens.. now to move up to the 1.4!
