I am getting a 20" Imac today. :clap:

Can I add Apple care later on and does this in effect extend the warranty to 3 years in total ?
 
I believe you can add it anytime within the first 12 months, but it does not extend the duration of cover.
 
I have just spoken to the Apple store, they said you can take it out any time in the first year and it includes cover for hardware faults for up to 3 years.

Hmmm. What I meant was that by delaying the purchase of the Applecare by 6 months, it does not give you an additional 6 months warranty over what you would have received had you taken out the Applecare on day one.

Clearly, you do get the benefit of the additional two years (or the purchased duration).
 
I will read through the Mac Tip a day thread when I get a chance.

I have a copy of MS Office for Mac on the way, only cost me £13 as I am working for the NHS at the moment. Seemed daft not to buy a copy.

I will need a photo editing app at some point, can't really afford Aperture at the moment, are there any good free editing apps out there ?
 
GIMP is meant to be good or try lightroom, you'll have to pay for a legit copy but i think it's prob worth it

Lightroom is better than Aperture. It's a bit more expensive though

Download a free trial of Pixelmator (www.pixelmator.com) - if you like it, it's only about 40 quid to buy it.

I always find this misleading A sales gimmick this 3yrs cover
You only get TWO years the first one is free i.e. you are extending to three years. That is why you can buy it any time within the first year.
I bought a Medion PC and get 3yrs with it with out paying extra

iPhoto actually isn't a bad app, and you already have it lol. Recognises RAW files, I don't think it does layers though...

Faces is very clever, it picked out a face on a photo on a window sill in the background of a photo of somebody else! PHEW :lol:
 
Welcome to the better side of computing! I've got a Aluminum MacBook and I absolutley love it! And yes...I am typing on it right now. Lol :D
 
My first question, I had a quick scan through the index on the tips thread and could not find an obvious answer.

I have connected my external USB drive to the Mac, it is a FAT32 drive, should it just appear like PnP on a Windows system or do I need to do something else to view it ?
 
You USB Drive should apear on your desktop as an amber box denoting the drive and it'll have the USB "prongs symbol on it

By the way if you a have any NTFS drives, they will also be seen on the desktop. However you will only be able to read from them, unless you get NTFS for OSX (£25 from the Apple store) You can then read and write to an NTFS volume
 
Installed Gimp. But when I do File Open I can't see a way of choosing the external USB drive to open pictures from.
 
On mine, File>Open and the external drive is a tab/button at the top.

But the easiest way to do things on a mac IMHO, is locate the file you want to use and drag it onto the Application icon on the dock.
So in this case just drag your picture file over the gimp icon and drop, done.
 
Getting back to the original question, the only advantage in buying Applecare early on rather than near the end of the 1 year warranty is for tech support. Apple's 1 year hardware warranty only gives you 3 months telephone tech support, but with Applecare it is for the full 3 years.

Another photo editing program to investigate is Photoshop Elements. Many of the commercial programs mentioned here have downloadable 30 day demo's, it's worth investigating these.
 
Applecare also covers all your Apple peripherals, such as Airport Express, Time Capsules etc in the cost.

For reading & writing NTFS drives have a look at MacFuse (it's free...)

If, for some reason, you still need to run Windows, don't bother buying VMWare or Parallels, get VirtualBox from Sun for free.

There's a reasonably good app bundle going cheap here at the moment too (includes Parallels US version if you really must have it ;) )

Another tip I can recommend, avoid looking in any of the Mac vs PC threads, anywhere, ever, you'll end up losing time you'll never get back ;)
