Getting Macro in closer

At the moment I use a Canon 100 Macro lens but would like to get in closer.

Camera is 650D.

As I see things there are a few routes to consider

1) Raynox lens -- will it fit over my Macro lens though which has a 67mm thread

2) Extension tubes basic

3) Extension tubes auto

With regard the last one I saw these on Ebay are they any good or is there something else I could consider

This is a shot i have taken with my 100mm macro with a raynox 250.
I have only just got the lens (£42 from amazon with free postage) so not had time to put it to a proper test yet, but it will give you an idea on what i have got with first crack at a 10p

Its only my first try with it, but my initial thoughts were good, i hope to try it soon in natural light to see how it fairs up.

I tend to use a full set of auto tubes plus a 1.4x teleconverter on my 100mm macro when I want to get in close.

Thats interesting Sue, hadnt thought about a teleconverter as well - what tubes do you use, do you have any sample photos

The tubes are just unbranded ones off eBay. Didn't cost much but do the job perfectly. I will sort a photo for you this afternoon as I am just setting off for work.

Hi, Had you thought about using a reversing ring on a lens that you already have. You would be surprised by how close you can get and how good the results can be. Hope this helps.

Here you go: This was before I had my Canon 100mm L macro, so is with a Tamron 90mm plus extension tubes and teleconverter.

Reversing ring with a 50mm on the end and 105 as the normal lens, working distance was reduced and seemed to match full extension tubes plus 105mm... - in my case...


If funds aren't a problem - mpe-65


Otherwise, extension tubes and the 100mm...
Silly question but does the 100mm have manual aperture and focus controls. If not you may need the extension tubes with contacts.

Sue thats pretty impressive - is that literally one shot or did you stack several images ?

Thanks, it is just one shot, natural light on a monopod. I couldn't tell you what the magnification was, but it certainly wasn't a large fly!
