Ok so I'm off to global gathering tomorrow and as usual my Canon 1000D, 18-55, nifty fifty, tamron 70-300 and my Canon f2.8L, flash gun and off cam flash chord will be with me.

This is my first event I will have shot, does anyone have any advice for me?

Thanks.

Tony.

I shoot GG every year. So here are my tips

1. You will have your camera pulled away from you by happy people asking you to take shots of them

2. You will have happy people jump in front of you while your trying to get a shot.

3. You will have happy people posing for you. Tell them to stub the fags out, put the beer down, girls put their tits away. Then you might get a shot that will end up in a mag.

4. When going from outside into a dance tent watch your lens start to drip with condensation

5. Flash will make shots worse in tents ... bounces back off smoke.

6. Drink lots of water

7. Numb yourself

8. Dont keep your camera slung behind you if your in the pit. They will pour beer over it.

9. Enjoy :)

The generally accepted minimum shutter speed is 1/effective focal length. With the 1000D it has a smaller (crop) sensor giving an effective focal length of 1.6x what the lens says. At 50mm you should be looking for 1/(50*1.6) = 1/80 as a minimum. This is usually fine for shorter focal lengths, but if you're trying to get a shot of the stage using the Tamron @300mm you'd be looking at a speed of 1/(300*1.6) so about 1/500 of a second. This would need good light to give a useable shot unless upping the iso. Flash won't be effective from that distance either.
Try it out at home first, stand in the garden and shoot houses down the street to see what you can get away with using.
A work around could be to not zoom in as far and crop the final image. Even cropping to 30% of the original size gives you a 3Mp image.

Thanks for that, do you have any tips on camera settings?

My tips come from doing years of this stuff ... so:

1. Shoot wide open
2. Hand hold down to 1/2 second. Be zen/calm like a sniper.
3. ISO no higher then 400
4. Watch the lights, time your shots when they come up. Like the music they have a rythm.
5. Wait for pyros at the end. if your shooting for GG you will get a list of when they happen. if you not, watch the pit. if not togs/security in it near the end ... pyros may be going off
6. Most of your shots will be trash but if you planned it right, gems will appear.
7. Avoid shoot in red light .... big no no

I have done all sorts of photography and this is one of the hardest. It pushes you, your kit and your mind.

go here:

and look at top slider of events. Might give you some ideas of where to shoot from.

Get lots of sleep now ..... your going to need it :D

Thanks. It is for my own use not for global, I have never done this before so it will be very hit or miss for me (more then likely a miss)

One of my really close friends is playing main stage on Saturday (micky slim) so I will be trying to get some half decent shots of him.

If hes a good mate, he can get you on his stage list for his set. Tell him to talk to a guy J.A. at GG parent company A ********* Music

JA is the man at the top and your mate will have dealt with him at some point.

Have a word, you might get lucky.

Sorry for the lack of direct names but its all trade stuff and i cant/wont give it here .... but your mate will know all that ;)

I think I get it although a 3mp picture would be fine as I won't be blowing it up right? Or am I?

3Mp can give an approximate resolution of 1750 square. This is higher than most computer screens so will be fine for computer/web use but will suffer if you try for a large print.
