Not sure it's the Olympics but defo the London Olympics, I now hear they are looking at ways to charge people to watch the cycle road race ( on public roads)

At the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010 , you could take any camera anywhere, I know people were taking 400mm and 500mm to the downhill with no issues at all. Also there were complaints that people could not close enough to the flame/caldron because of a security fence surrounding it, so the organisers removed the fence can't see london doing anything to help the public.

London is becoming a right shambles what with the total farce of ticket sales and all the money grabbing.

So how would they achieve that then?;)
OK not all the route, but the best bits in Box Hill where they will pass NINE times.

Politicians have also weighed into the issue. London Assembly chair of the economic, culture and sport committee, Dee Doocey, noted such a move, which would be the first time the critical mountain stage had to be paid for by spectators at an Olympic Games, was contrary to Locog's earlier position.
"This would be dreadful and most regrettable, it is totally against what Locog has been saying all along,"

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/ol...tch-road-cycling-events-in-Box-Hill-area.html

I now see that Locog have produced 70-page booklet for spectators on how to negotiate Greenwich Park on Horse cross-country day . :bonk:

You might want to have a word with the athletes who see this as the pinnacle of their career. Or just carry on with your ill-informed rant.

You really have no idea about the Olympics.

"Thank you for your interest in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic
Winter Games.

Spectators will be allowed to bring cameras, however, recording images
for commercial purposes (any type of selling of the image) will be
prohibited."

This really is standard stuff, in the same way you can't publish photos from football, rugby and nearly all sports events in the UK.

Since when has it been commercial purposes to post a picture to Facebook?

The bit of the ticketing rules to which you are (probably) referring is the one which says that images captured by spectators at London 2012 events "cannot be used for any purpose other than for private and domestic purposes". The point is that posting something on Facebook *might* not count as "private and domestic".

In copyright law, private use of copyrighted images is generally allowed. But if you posted somebody else's copyrighted photo on Facebook, you wouldn't be able to claim it was private use, and you could still be liable for breach of copyright.

So if Facebook isn't "private use" for copyright issues, is it "private use" for Olympics images? I don't know. You'd have to ask a lawyer.

Its not ill informed though ...might be strongly worded but actually right. Of course those athletes would be welcome to come and discuss the damage the 'pinnacle of their careers' is doing to a large number of small business anytime. To para phrase the Telegraph the olympic is nothing more then an £11bn advertising campaign for some of the worlds worst companies

Well it's certainly for commerical purposes for Facebook.

LOCOG will not go after an individual who posts a photo on Facebook (they have already said that). What they will do is go after anyone who is trying to gain commercially from it.

When did anyone mention commercial purposes, and you can publish photos from nearly every sport in the UK just check out the forums sports section.

Now you say I have no idea about the Olympics, but some of us are not stupid enough to make a statement with out being able to back it up, looks to be plenty of folk publishing photos from 2010 in my eyes..

Do please enlighten me as to how many Olympic games you have covered as an accredited photographer.

Who the **** is talking about accredited photographers, the whole thread is about SPECTATORS taking photo.

I say again, you have no idea about the Olympics. I covered both Beijing and Vancouver so know first hand the restrictions and experiences of photographers and specatators.

We can hear the zippers being opened all the way up in staff room. Please stop talking to each other in such disrespectful ways, you wouldn't talk to your mother like that, don't do it here.

If she were still alive, I'd happily tell her she had no idea about the Olympics! :)

Ah well, that will be 9.6 miles of stands (both sides of the roads I assume?) then - no worries:lol:

over a SSI and an area they are trying to 'protect' as well

Only in some areas not the whole course.

that is just some areas  the 9 odd miles is the section they're talking about charging for but the whole thing is over 150 miles long

Yeah, Box Hill will be the prime point.
I wonder what would happen if the organisers of the Tour de France tried the same thing on Alpe d'Huez or any of the other iconic viewpoints?

9.6 miles X 14 laps = ?
Then add on a little bit for the start and finish.;)
