Today the mean man from Parcel force comes to collect two lovely lenses and take them away to the evil people at MPB.

I figure that as I barely use my camera I shouldn't really have lenses like the Nikon 17-55 F/2.8 sat around not being used. Its not that I don't like using them its just that often when I go on holiday I find I'll take my camera with me but most of the time I'll leave it in the hotel and just use a point and shoot or even - heaven help me, my camera phone.

I'm keeping my camera because I love aviation photography. Currently all I have in my camera bag is a D300, a Nikkor 300 F/4 AF-S and a teleconvertor.

So I've been wondering, should I go for the Nikon 18-200 VRII as my everyday / holiday lens, should I just use the money to pay off my stupid bills or even consider getting something like a Canon G12, that I'll use every day on holiday...?

This is mainly a rant. I'm downsizing due to not really using my existing kit and wondering what to do.

Hi Robert

Can't help you with the lens quality etc directly, but if you didn't use your SLR with the lenses you already had on holiday, would you use it with a different lens ?

It sounds like you might be better going for something like a G12 you mention

Personly I find it to easy to sit infront of the computer and think "I should buy a Fuji X100" or some such.,

Just go out with the gear you have got and use it and see if you come up with limitations.

Personly I think that a D300+18-200 is going to be just as bulky and annoying as the 17-55mm.

I love my Voigtlander 40mm. it makes a fantastic relativly campact camera set up out of a DSLR, (brillant on my old D60) It is manual foucs but to behonest I find that it makes the photographic prossess more fun! I can tell you from expreince that shooting a wedding using MF lenses is not fun! :)

Keep the SLR for your aviation and have a G12 for your everyday fun.

Maybe even look at a M4/3?

If you are budgeting for a G12 then for just a small bit more you could get a M43 like the Olympus E-PL3. Especially if you sell the 17-55 and just use the Nikon and 300/4 for aviation.
