Hi all

I'm off to NYC next year and was thinking of taking a gorillapod/copy along with me to stick in my bag.

What I was wondering is do you need a ball head with one, or does it work out of the box.

I've seen pictures of them being used with and without, so was wondering if they are needed, or do people just add a ball head onto them to make it easier to setup.

You need to fit some kind of head as they are only legs like most tripods.
You can probably use your existing head if you have one as it has a couple of thread sizes for the head to screw to.
the ball head is probably the best option as its light and easay to use.
They cost around £30 on Ebay.

I just screw mine into the bottom of the camera, but a head would give you more movement
 
I use a GP SLR Zoom and it has a Manfrotto ball head fitted to it. It makes it far easier to set up as well as adding a QR plate to the support.

I was thinking of getting one for xmas as a stocking filler, but don't really want to be pushing it up to £60-70 with having to buy a ball head as well.
 
I have a gorilla pod focus with monfrotto head for sale . the focus is their elite model. let me know if anyone is interested . paid £140 for the pair from jesops . mint used once on my trip
 
Curious to know why a joby/gorilla pod.. Are you after a small tripod or is it because the legs bend around stuff :shrug:

Only reason I'm asking is that if your after a small travel tripod then why dont you condider a Trek-Tech T'pod - I have one and its a crcking little thing (even wrote that review :$)

Tis just a thought thats all....

I'm only after a small tripod for travel. I thought i'd post on here asking a question and hoping that some kind soul would maybe offer me an alternative. ;)
 
After a couple of quick searches i've come across the Trek Tech Optera 230.

Looks good :)

I know Fabs has had the Optera 460 which is the larger one, but does anyone have any experience with the smaller 230?

I've had the larger 460 version as well - its huge.... If the smaller version is anything to go by then I would either go for the Joby/gorilla pod or the Trek-Tech T'pod... That comes with a ball head (its held my D700 with a grip & the 70-200mm VRII with no worries)... Its quite handy as you can make it smaller by removing the pole/shaft & just plonking it straight on to the base with just the head.. It packs away really neatly to a compact size of 8x3x1 inches in its carry case/pouch.. That earth magnet does hold - I've tried it (where they hold the camera upside down)

For the virtually the same amount as a Joby/gorilla pod I would recommend it...
