Motorsport presents some of the most dynamic and vibrant opportunities for sports photography available to a spectator. As a hobbyist photographer, you are provided with much better opportunities compared with virtually every other sporting discipline, the large venues allow you to move around and get closer to the action than you are often able to at things like football matches or athletics events.

A good guide but Silverstone is probably one of the worst circuits to do motorsport photography at (unless you have media access), there's fencing up around nearly all the circuit making panning shots very difficult. It gets extremely busy during the major events. Compared to most other tracks you are generally a long way from the action (though this is to be expected with it being the only fia grade 1 circuit in the u.k). Its better to start at a smaller venue like Lydden Hill or Croft where there is little/no fencing, and they run smaller events which are great to practise at.
