Hard drive problem

I have a 320GB 2.5" sata hard drive in a usb caddy. It shows up in My Computer after a while but I can't click on it and see the contents.

I have tried a different caddy, still no worky.

The data transfer light on the caddy flashes continuously for hours but never transfers the contents.

I would like to format it but I can't right click and format, any ideas?
 
Might just be the USB cable?

Can you see it in the Disk Management (right click My Computer, Manage)?

If so, you may be able to do something there with it.
 
It's deffo not the usb cable.

Disk management will not fully load as it waits for the info from this disk (which never comes) and I get the 'loading disk config info' message. As soon as I unplug the disk, Disk management shows up all the disks.

It is not asking to be formatted, I would just like to clear/reset everything and start fresh.
 
It's a WD3200BEVT
 
2.5" in a caddy means powered from USB. Try a different port on the back of the PC or a powered USB hub to run it. Could be needing more power than the port can give it.

I had a problem hard-drive once, main difference was that my OS was on it and so I couldn't boot. There were some files I reaaally needed to rescue on it too.

It's a funny way of doing things but this worked:

I booted from a Ubuntu Live CD and my hard drive showed up in there. I was able to browse it and save what I needed to another HD.

I know it's not the same situation but perhaps it's worth a go? :)
