Hard Time trying to buy a cheapo Nikon 35mm

I went into Liverpool city Centre this morning, this was with the idea of buying a cheap little Nikon 35mm 1.8G prime. I just fancy throwing this on my body while doing my daily walk in the park.

I had the money in my pocket ready to buy there and then, but I could not find a shop that had one in stock!

I tried Jessops, Currys, and John Lewis and a few other well known stores. The only place that had one in was John Lewis, but that was a display lens only and they would not sell it to me!

I ended up ordering one on line, it will be available for in store pick up in about four days confirmation email says.

I thought with it being a cheap lens it would be readily available to buy pretty easily, but no.
 
With it being one of their cheapest lenses it does tend to be quite popular. If you were desperate for one quite quickly there's always amazon next day delivery which will probably bring up the cost to around the average retail price on the high street. Or if you're really desperate, there's same day delivery on some items.

Quite an impressive service, I paid for it before to see if they could live up to the promise. It wasn't looking hopeful as it got to 3pm and they hasn't even dispatched it. Then it updated saying the courier picked it up at around 3.20 from somewhere around Milton Keynes. It was at my front door in Nottingham just before 4.30!!

Must admit I have never bought anything through Amazon, I am just reading through their site now for future reference.
 
Have you tried PC World? That's where I got mine from, and it was (a smidge) cheaper than anywhere I could find online.

Yes tried Currys/ PC World non in stock to sell me. Argos has the lens for home delivery, but they are asking £180 while Jessops, John Lewis and most other places it is £143. When it is in stock that is !
 
good price that 143 they are that sort of money and more from the Hong kong suppliers

Was starting to bid on one on ebay, but started to get too close to shop prices. By the time you add on postage it is not much cheaper !
 
I got mine off Amazon for same price as Jessops with next day postage. Would have cost me more in petrol to get it from Jessops too!
 
Got a nice surprise email from Jessops this afternoon, saying my lens was ready to pick up. Now that was pretty quick :) Just picked it up, can't wait to get out and use it

Good to hear, it's always nice having a new lens and getting the satisfaction of opening a new box :thumbs:
 
Hiya Jonbeza, I think you'll find that whilst the wait was frustrating you really have ended up with a superb lens, mine rarely (in a figure of speach !!!) leaves my camera.
Wait until you start shooting wide open - the bokeh is truly stunning - post us some pictures from your new toy
 
I have bought all my kit from amazon - good buyer protection - they come down hard on sellers that don't perform - if poss get stuff from amazon themselves (as opposed to amazon linked sellers) its usually quicker.

Having said that i cannot fault anything or any seller on amazon.

Yes it is a bit weird, but I have never thought about buying camera gear via Amazon. Maybe I have always thought of them as a book sales place, not sure why :thinking:

I must admit it does feel good, great at focusing and super smooth. I have been chasing the missus around the house, just seeing what it's like at low light shooting, and I must admit I love it. If I get anything decent worth posting, I will do so. ;)
 
re Amazon - I had a problem with a speaker switch which went faulty two months after it was installed, but that was six months after purchase (reasons). Yes it was a third party seller. I contacted and dialogue went on for a couple of weeks. He was a right P I T A and I got nowhere. I contacted Amazon. Basically as it was post 90 days they did not want to know.

My advice re Amazon is avoid, or at least be careful. Personally I have found e-bay far more reliable and genuine.

Amazon is solid for returns if you actually buy via them, infact I'd go as far as saying they're the best.

I am relating my experience. I had a legitimate complaint and Amazon were not interested. If I had the same experience via e-bay I would have had some redress.
 
I'm having a similar problem with a couple of things I'm looking at as well, although they are slightly more exotic. My local store is Digital Depot, they used to be spectacular, had a massive selection of Tripods in store and a huge lens collection as well, now they have a much smaller shop area and the stuff they now stock is minuscule compared to what they did, I assume they are currently struggling? :( I also went into the (what I assume is flagship) Camulet store today, nope, couldn't find what I was looking for either. Both could order it in for me but then what is the point? I may as well buy it on the internet anyway as I'll have to wait and have my first test of it after I have bought it... And I won't have to ask about price matching...
