Have I got an iffy Canon 55-250mm?

I've recently purchased a Canon 55-250mm Telephoto lens to go with my 30d and can't help but think there's something wrong with it as I'm struggling to get any clear shots with it. On zooming in on photos to 100%, none are clear... even when the 55-250mm has IS.

Just for comparison, I've taken a photo using an 18-55mm kit lens (no IS on this one) at 55mm and the same shot with the 55-250mm lens at 55mm.

The first is the 18-55mm and the second the 55-250mm. Both same shutter speed of 1/60 and ISO and focused towards the earpiece of the phone. (Excuse the fact that it's pink :D) I've included links to reach the full size pictures. I've been using the Panasonic logo as a reference point.

The second shot looks much better!
 
I would say 1 is clearer, but I would look to see the same shot using a shutter of 1/100 as 1/60 might be a bit slow even with IS on.

Flickr doesn't show the images in their full resolution unfortunately but if you look closely at the Panasonic logo in the large images on Flickr, there is blurring there.

Yeah now I'm on my PC I see what you mean now... It looks like camera shake though I appreciate the IS was on, but its not infallible, and you were using very slow shutter speeds..

I'd try a more favorable test in good light, then you should see for certain - you should never 'test' a lens in low light, unless you are testing a fast lens wide open. Otherwise you cant eliminate the slow shutter speed / camera movement from the equation.

The 55-250 IS is a very sharp lens.
 
Thank you for the advice. Still very new to DSLRs and setting up settings manually.

I bought the shutter speed down and lit up the area and did get much better results. I guess it goes to show that no two lenses respond the same.

Spent a good few hours over the weekend in gloomy woodland taking shots to be left disappointed... only to discover when I got home I completely under estimated the ISO setting and it's effect. Live and learn!

:agree: Perhaps a little camera shake being a longer lens.

I have the same lens and love how sharp it is.
