Heat & Humidity

Hi everyone

I'm off to Mexico in July and it will be very very hot and humid. I wonder how my Nikon D5100 will cope with it.

I know that near the sea it will be about 30's but we are going to Chichen Itza which is further inland with temperatures reaching 40 and humidity levels close to 100% or so I'm told from tripadvisor.

I was really keen on taking my camera but I'm not sure if I may damage it or what precautions should I take.

Thanks in advance

David

I don't think heat will be a problem. 40C isn't all that extreme, and I've often used my 30D in that temperature range without any problems, but that was in dry, savannah, heat in Africa. Humidity might be another story, and I'm sure someone will advise.

Couple of things though. You may have some condensation problems if you're staying in air conditioned accommodation, and take the camera straight out when it's 40C, and I wouldn't leave it inside a car or coach in the sun. Temperatures will soar well above 40C then.

My 5D worked fine when I was in central America earlier in the year.

Just try not to expose (pun intended) it to sharp shock heat levels. from an AC room to outside and vice versa. You really need to keep it warm all the time if it's mostly warmth you're using it or cold when you're using it mainly in colder climates. I don't know if you wear glasses but when something cold like a lens gets hit by a sudden heat you'll get mega condensation.

I'd only be bothered about the condensation factor - as pointed out, air-con into warmth & humidity.

And also spare batteries and charging them! I once had a charger that required 240 volts, so I was scuppered with my rechargables..

Most modern chargers compensate for this I assume though.
