Got some questions for you

I currently own

D70
18-70mm kit lens
70-300mm G non vr
50mm 1.8D
SB600

Im thinking of selling all but SB600 and 50mm and going for a D700 + 14-24mm 2.8 + 24-70mm 2.8 + 70-200mm 2.8 (or possibly 300mm F4).

But i have some questions.

can the d700 be put into DX mode for more reach ?

When is the D700s/x/D800 due out ? Will this have 1080p video ? I do alot of video work but use a canon dv cam which isnt very good, means i have to cart 2 bags around, and it saves useless .MOD files, and isnt HD compatible. No VR and pretty rubbish sensor too. So having a camera with it would be nice but cant really afford a D3s.

Canon 5dmk2 is cheaper and so are the lenses, however I like Nikon.

ISO on D70 is useless above 400 IMO.

However i would need to take out a loan to buy all the above new.

Also, will the 70-200mm have enough reach to shoot aircraft at airshows ? Would be mounted on a 220cm Gitzo series 5, with Arca Z1 ballhead.

Thanks

D700 can be put into DX mode but does not give you more reach just a reduced field of view. Also cuts files down to 5.1MP

700s D800 who knows, lots of rumours

70-200 only good enough for very close passes at airshows, I'd look longer 300F4 plus TC.

I use both.

No DX cameras give more reach, they are all a narrower field of view which means the subject fills the frame more and gives the perseption of giving ore reach.

That's a lot of lovely gear :) A lot of money too.

D700's virtues - and it has many - are that it's full frame, superb low light/high ISO performance, fast AF, fast frame rate (with battery grip). Do you particularly need these things?

Do you need full frame? What about video? Other cameras have more resolution (cropping potential) and reach. Canon 5DMkII, 7D? Do you need all f/2.8 lenses? You rarely get opportunities like this to switch brands, but if Canon offers the best mix it's worth considering.

At the moment im either waiting out for a D700 with video, or thinking about D3s but dropping the 70-200mm so I can afford it. Have seen alot of landscape pics taken with the 14-24mm and im very impressed.

That's a very nice shot John, but could just as easily have been taken on a compact from what I'm looking at. Or your D70
