Not a nikoner - but check and clean contacts between lens and body, and format memory card for starters...

Take batteries out for a minimum of 2 hours [ works with Pentax cameras IF they do strange unaccountable things ]

Oh and what actually were you doing / trying to do when you got that message ?

Thank for the replies. I am asking on behalf of someone on their hols in Devon so sorry if details are sketchy. They were using the camera OK this morning and taking photos, but now the "Err" message has appeared and pictures cannot be taken. He has cleaned all the contacts and swapped and formatted cards. He is going to try the battery option which is worth a go. Any other help grathefully received. Thank you evrybody so far for the answers.

Shutterbox problem, apparently. Occurring after as little as 5,000 shots.

Nikon D80

Getting message "Err"

Any advice please?

The manual says:

Camera malfunction - release shutter. If error persists or appears frequently seek medical advice. Okay, the medical advice bit isn't right but you'll probably need it after Nikon have quoted you for the repair :D

Or send it away for a quote.

I got that on my d80 when I was using the 50mm 1.4 lens. I had moved the aperture ring around from f16 (which is yellow and the camera likes that for A priority) to something else. Took me a while to figure it out...but when I put it back on f16 on the aperture ring on the lens (not on the camera) all was funky again.

Thanks everybody. He decided not to go down the DIY route, but is going to try to leave the battery out overnight to see if it clears itself....if not try and look for a camera shop close to where they are staying. Will check back tomorrow for more ideas if you have any. Thanks so much everybody. :)

Hi.
Just wanted to thank all the replies. I have just returned from a weeks holiday down in south Devon, I had to phone a friend to log in and ask the original question on my behalf, hoping that i could get a quick result. being in the Salcombe area the nearest camera shop was some 26 miles away, or at least thats all i could find from locals.
The D80 had just been handed down to my son so was disappointed that it let him down after so many yrs of no problems.

The Err message appears all the time with or without a lens attached, shutter opens but no picture shows, cannot change M A S P or anything from that dial.
Back in Norfolk now so its a visit to the local camera shop, and will have to except the worst.
