Help! Can't download from camera!

I've just changed lapdogs and now have a new one with Vista.

I uploaded all the software that came with my camera and it all seemed to install ok. I have just plugged my 400D into it via USB and lappy recognises camera is attached, but asked me what task to carry out (on old lappy it automatically went into Canon Utilities). When I click on what to do nothing happens, eventually camera powers down.
I have manually called up the Canon Utility and the download images button is greyed out. I have pressed the transfer images button on the back of the camera and nothing happens.

I then went to Canon website and downloaded/installed latest version Canon Utilities. It doesn't seem to want to even start now.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm getting very hacked off.

unfortuntely mine did this, the drivers dont install properly.

The quickest way is to plug the camera in - to go to My Computer, then look for you cammera, and keep double clicking the folders until you get to your photos
 
It's odd, I'm running Vista 64bit and my 1D won't work at all through firewire or the Canon software, however it will work as a 'removable storage' under My Computer...but dog slow. My 30D on the other hand works fine through the Canon software, and not at all through My Computer.

So my 30D is now a very expensive memory card reader :lol:
 
Hi Pippy........have you got a card reader? That's my preferred method of image transfer.....and it saves draining the camera battery too :thumbs:
 
Thanks for all your help, managed to get it to work, although anything but the automatic connection I would expect from new and expensive kit.

I've seen some more comments like this in other places during tonights research. With the 1D apparently you need to download the latest RAW software from the Canon website...?

You've just reminded me, yes I have, attached to my old (and dead) desktop upstairs... but I bought a lovely battery grip from MercmanUK so battery life not an issue anymore.

Anyway, thanks for all your comments - if anyone has a more definitive answer it seems we all need it!

I knew someone would come up with the Mac argument! I wish I could go Mac as I want garageband as well, all via work though so no choice unless I fork out my hard earned. But that is all being spent on my house at the moment, which is why I have a 400D and not a 5D and a bag full of Loveliness.

You're right. It's not the end of the world. But you'd think someone like Canon would put software updates on their website to make their products work effectively with Vista? After all, it's not like untold millions of us won't be kind of forced to use it whether we like it or not...

Does anything work properly with Vista,on my works laptop I am having endless trouble with Word 2007 and Vista
 
Right - if you really want to sort this out you will have to download the latest versions of all of your Canon software (or at least DPP).

The software from your disk won't work on Vista properly but will install correctly. You need an installation present on your computer because otherwise Canon won't let you install the latest versions.

Now you have the old Software installed from the disk. Now go and download and install the latest versions from here.

OOOPS sorry have just seen you have done this already. Ignore me!
