My husband bought me a Nikon D80 for Chritmas 06, I am devastated that the shutter release has stopped working and the rear LCD doesn't work. I have returned the camera to Nikon who have been very helpful but estimate the cost of repairs at £276.oo.

I am wondering if this is a common fault on these cameras and if anyone can advise me on whether it is worth repairing or is it likely to develop any other faults.

I am a recent convert to digital SLR's and have taken extremely good care of this camera as it was an expensive investment and an upgrade from my first digital a Nikon D50. I am at a loss as to know what to do. The pictures I have taken have been superb but I did expect this camera to last significantly longer than it has. Any advice or help would be appreciated.

All I can say is that my D80 is approaching 30,000 actuations and looks and feels like new. There is a slight bit of wear at the top of the rubber thumb grip and the light bulb logo is rubbing slightly off the power switch.
Otherwise you could put it in a shop as a new item.
Sorry to hear yours has developed these faults, I wouldn't repair mine, I'd put the money towards a D700, but I've had plenty of use out of mine.

Sounds like you have been incredibly unlucky with it, don't hear too many stories of shutters or LCDs packing up in them, though of course, its an electro mechanical object therefore the law of averages says that some will fail much earlier then expected. £276 isn't a million miles from the value of the body as a s/h piece of kit, but significantly less than an upgrade would cost. You won't get that money back [taking into account purchase cost and depreciation of course] if you do decide to repair then sell on/px at a later date, but then, you would have to spend more than that now to replace with equivalent, even a s/h one, so really its up to you. If you are happy with the camera and its capabilities, repair, if you feel that maybe this is the to to upgrade, then save the money and put towards a new one.

I suppose it depends on the type of usage the camera has had, but i wouldnt normally expect it to need those kind of repairs in just 2 years.

The cheapest option would be to get yours repaired. It will come with a guarantee on the repair and I would expect Nikon will check everything else is ok.

A used D80, from someone like MPBphotographic, will be around £330 and will have a guarantee ( probably about 3 months) or a used D200 from them will be about £400.

Then you have the new D90, but the price jump is quite high.

Only you can make the decision, but the D200 is a very worthy upgrade if you decide not to repair yours.

Something else of course, depending on usage, you may be able to go back to original retailer and cite the sale of goods act - this will depend on number of shutter actuations and the camera not appearing to have been abused in any way but worth bearing in mind.

According to camerapricebuster.com a new D80 body with a 2 year guarantee is £391.46 from Amazon and I would reckon you'd still get about £150 or so on Ebay for your dead one, which would be cheaper than getting yours repaired....

Thank you for all your feedback, the camera is kept dry and warm, I tend to be a fair weather photographer so it doesn't get taken out in rain / bad weather.

I am beginning to think it is certainly bad luck, which I seem to be having a run of at the moment!

My friends D80 lcd died also. It cost about £175 to repair at Nikon. It was avery low shutter count model.
