I'll be getting a windfall in a few weeks, and I'm struggling to decide what'll be a better investment.
I'm either going for a 50d and 580ex flash, or 40d with 430ex and 10-20 lens.

Which is more future proof?

Any or all of those can and probably will be updated at some point.

What do you think you need the most?

A future proof body. I'm looking at the 7d and drooling...

OK, so I think I've made a decision.. 50d with 17-85 lens, 430ex mk2, 50mm f/1.8. If I bought a 7d it'd be body only and I need the extra bits.
Any sites anyone could recommend to get a bundle from would be appreciated.

Best bet ring some shops and ask for best price for buying that lot in one go:)

The 430 exII is on offer over Easter at Warehouse Express with £100 off

I suggest buying Used, and getting better glass that will definitely be more future proof. If you are going to pay retail for a 17-85mm, you may as well pay a bit more for a used higher quality glass, like a 17-55mm f/2.8 IS or an L lens, especially if futureproof is what you are aiming at.

It all depends on what you shoot also, what would be more worth investing in for your situation. Since you were considering a 10-20mm, I assume landscapes are one of your interests? If so, maybe getting that lens over anything else would be more suitable if you will get the most use out of it.

Either way, I don't think the 17-85mm is that future proof as I've read it isn't that great. Nifty fifty is a no brainer since it is so cheap.

If you were considering getting all you listed brand new, you could probably pick up in the used market, 40D + 17-55mm f/2.8 + 10-20mm + 50mm f1.8. Not massive amount of difference between 40D and 50D, you will get more from investing more in lenses.

There's no such thing as a futureproof body; in only 12 months they're usually on their way out (which doesn't mean they won't still take amazing pictures; any model available now will last you for five or ten years as long as the shutter keeps working, it's just that new developments will make you want to upgrade within one or two years anyway).

I'd spend the least of your money on a body, and the most on glass; glass lasts a lot lot longer.

The bulk of my shooting is portraits, that's what I specialise in. I'll look into picking up a second hand L glass lens, got my heart set on the 50d now though.
