Can anyone recommend a good quality but small bag?
I'd like it to be back pack / sling type with enough room to hold -

Canon 1000D with a 18-85mm + hood attached
55-250mm lens
1 flash
A couple of filters, some batteries (about 6-8 AA + one canon) and a few memory cards.

The smaller the bag the better.

I just got a TAMRAC VELOCITY X9 SLING BAG which is actually quite big, its fits my gripped D90 with 80-200 F2.8 lens, Sigman 28-60 F2.8 and my kit lens in and still more room. I think they do smaller versions to, seems to work great though as you just slide it to the front pop open the top (zip) and access your gear

I think the 7x should be the right size for me :)

Unless there are any other makes out there that closely match the TAMRAC VELOCITY X7?

I have Lowepro slingshot 202aw and have basically the same equipment as you. It fits perfect even with room to spare. Even can take the 55-250 lens attached to camera too. Not sure if the 102aw would fit, but it would be smaller again. Saying that the 202aw ain't exactly that big.
 
Hi Chris, I've got a Lowerpro Flipside 200...perfect for my 1000D, 18-55 and 70-300, plus grip, batteries and cards.

You are welcome, I also have a Lowepro sling type bag which is excellent to but the New Tamrac I just got is something else, so easy to access my gear and holds so much :thumbs:
 
Lowepro Classified 160aw is good. Can fit quite a bit and still remains quite discrete, also easy to get the camera oout in a hurry.
 
If you want serious quality in a small bag try Billingham
