Help me spend £3000 on camera equipment...

Remember that your company will reclaim any VAT. Therefore your budget is £3000 + VAT. consider the 5D2 and 24-70 2.8, you won't need another wide. Maybe have enough left for 70-200 2.8 non IS

Speak to the Financial/Purchasing department. It's standard practise to reclaim VAT on Company expediture.
 
I have read that someone called Ian Kerso can get US Equipment with a UK invoice and therefore prices are cheaper but retains a UK warrenty.

Does anyone have contact details for him please?

Can we be abit careful in whats being said in this thread.

The 24-105mm f4 on a full frame camera is the same as a 24-105mm f4 on a cropped sensor. The difference is caused by the sensor on the cropped body. It doesn't change the focal length only the way the image is framed. So on a cropped body the 24-105mm frames like a 38.4-168mm lens.

For me personally I wouldn't recommend the 24-105mm lens for a cropped body because you lose the wide angle capability, then you get suggestions like "then you need the 10-22mm to cover UWA" obviously people have money to burn, the 17-55mm f2.8 EF-S lens would been a better lens option.

In your other thread, you mention indoor photography, personally wouldn't use the 10-22mm either, it distorts the image due to the fisheye effect, you would be better of with a prime lens for this purpose.



Ok, your boss has said, buy a camera for work, but you'll have almost sole use of the camera and lens(es). I would base the purchase around this rather than kit for your motorsport (sorry) and the 5D MKII would be better option for this than the 7D.

Why - The larger sensors (FF) generally provide more control and greater artistic flexibility, but at the cost of requiring larger lenses and more expensive equipment. so there's pro's and con's to whether you go full frame or crop

The 24-70mm would be an ideal lens to use for your work photography, warehouse express has this package currently at £2549.00, Kerso (Ian, you can PM him here on TP) would probably be able to do this package slightly cheaper, but not sure how this would play with your finance department.

The 70-200mm f2.8 (non IS) would be a perfect partner to this lens if you when FF, but it depends on finances and what you boss will agree too.
 
I think what Pete said above makes a lot of sense. Only the OP will know the details from the work point of view. It would seem the FF 5D2 would be better for that purpose with the 24-70 lens or even the 16-35 lens if a lot of interiors are to be shot.

The OP has not really said what sort of photographs are required from the work point of view so this is difficult to advise.

Funnily enough I use a 7D and 10-22mm (haven't noticed any fisheye effect but I'll carefully look at it) and a 24-105mm, which is precicely why I suggested a 5D(better IQ) with a 24-105mm as it's an excellent gp lens on a ff body. :thumbs:

It does create distortion if you pick the wrong subject to photograph.

Taking into account the fact you won't be paying VAT, he won't be much cheaper I don't think?

Since it's going to be works kit, not yours, check if the 3k is before or after VAT - if it's ex VAT you effectively have an extra £500 to play with.:)

Thats what I thought, surely its a more than capable camera and I would benefit more by spending the 500 saved by getting a 7D instead of a 5DII on better / more glass ?

The 50D, 550D and even the 1000D are all capable cameras. You need to know what is important to you and what equipment you will get the best out of. Indoor you will want high ISO performance, moving/speed photography high FPS etc, etc.

Persoanally I would get a 5D if I had £3000 to spend, you can always build on the lenses yourself, FF goodness I wish I could afford you!

18-55mm on a crop sensor frame like (the maths bit 18x1.6....etc = 28.8-88mm lens on a full frame sensor), on full frame 18mm is 18mm, so the 24-70 on full frame would be 24, so this is wider than your 18-55mm

well, it certainly is a more than capable camera and I'm not sure why people do pigeon hole it into a wildlife and sport lens - sure it's great at those and probably better at those than a 5d, and a 5d is better at portrait and landscape but what about everything from the 450d upwards? They are certainly not better at portraits and landscapes than the 7d and you don't usually hear someone saying get a 450d for wilidlife and a 5d for landscapes.

If it was your money then I would suggest the 7D for motorsport/wildlife or a 2nd Hand 1D MKIII, however as its for work and its their money, I would go for the 5D MKII, but you need to talk over with your boss as to what he want you to really use the camera for?, then base you equipment selecect around that.

I don't think it is really for work at all, just the occasional general purpose job.

He is doing it as a way to reward me and use up some left over budget :D I will check with him on Monday though.
 
I think it would be good to have two options. A 7D setup and a 5D setup.

Canon 7D Body £1,075.00
10-22 £549.00
24-70 f2.8 L £945.00
70-200mm F4.0L £459.00

Total £3,028.00

Slightly over budget without cards and a bag.

Or maybe...

Canon 5D MKII Body £1,549.00
24-70 f2.8 L £945.00

Total £2,494.00

+ something else.....? Could get the 70-200 f4L at a stretch again but would be without cards and a bag.

This is sooooo hard!!

I work in IT, but after the public affairs team saw my website and pictures they asked if I wanted to do some photos for them instead of them paying a lot of money for a pro photographer. My boss heard about it too and used this as an excuse to get me some new kit :love:

Any suggestions on a setup for £3k with the 5D MKII ?

I think there have been good recomendations in here already, except I thought you said you wanted to shoot motorsports? the 5d wouldn't be as good as the 7d for that.
 
Just skimming through and u still want the 7d as its better at motor sport Im afraid that the line up of lenses give for the 7D is IMO wrong.

7D and 24-70 are not really the best combination as the 7d is a crop while the 24-70 is suited for FF.
Alos teh canon UWA is not the best UWA on the market.

Tokina 11-16 2.8
17-55 canon 2.8

bags and accessories

Here u have some of the badass lenses, you could actually kill someone with the tokina, its cheaper, its better then, and it will leave u enough money to but the 70-200 without doing the math even for the 2.8 maybe
 
Just looked back on this thread and thought I'd better mention that if you do get the 5d, and I think you should, remember to factor in a flash as it doesn't have a popup one. For motorsport get yourself a s/h 40d :thumbs:
 
You are very luck to be in such a situation.

I would look at a 7D, a couple of flashes and the best possible glass you can afford.
