Help ! Miranda canon fit lens, what adaptor needed?

It'll be an older Canon FD mount that's not really compatible with your Eos mount body. FD-Eos adapters are available but the glassless ones won't allow focus to infinity and the ones with glass reduce the image quality substantially.

The difficulty is that FD lenses were closer to the film/sensor than Eos lenses (termed the register distance) so it's like having a small extension tube in there.

It would allow the lens to mount to the body but you wont be able to focus to infinity. You also appreciate that it'll me manual focus and manual aperture control?

this is true - but who focusses a macro lens to infinity anyway ? ;)
 
Yes I knew it would be manual focus, but I thought hey you've got to give it a go sometime, can't go on auto forever

The "macro" tag is really just marketing speech for closer than normal focus. The lens will only go down the 1/4 life size so it's a long way from being a macro lens and most present day medium telephotos will do the same.

Errr yes you can (and should)

If you want to see what manual focus should be like, get an old Canon A1 to go with that lens.

Your 350d has a reduced size viewfinder (because it's only using half the frame size as a 35mm SLR) so you're peering at a small screen:(. Then instead of a pentaprism, Canon used a mirror (lighter and cheaper but not as light efficient):shake:, then they nicked 10% of the light coming through the lens for the AF sensors (making your view even darker):'(. Then to add insult to injury, because your camera is designed to AF, they didn't supply you with a proper focus screen to help you focus the lens:gag:.

Your camera was built to make use of AF lenses, just let it have it's way, use it the way it was designed to be used. Using MF lenses (unless they're awesome specialist ones) makes as much sense as ripping up your fitted carpets to beat them over the clothes line instead of using a vacuum.
 
Ok,

Well I've decided to sell this lens / swap it for an eos mount one.

I was willing to try manual focus, but with the mount adaptor needed and image compromise using a mount, I think It'd be easier to try and get hold of a different eos fit lens

10% would be wonderful Phil, the mirrors are 40% transmissive and 60% reflective.....40% of the light gets nicked.

I think the forum as a whole is a little bit more "Brown Ale" than "Sauvignon Blanc", Phil.

Alas....wouldn't it be great if mirrors could be swapped out like focusing screens for MF usage.

personally I want to see a swappable sensor cartridge which can go in the film bay of any 35mm giving all that film kit another lease of life

(it will never happen, unless a third party makes it bespoke , as the big companies have a vested interest in selling new bodys , not recycling old ones
