I appreciate you probably get this type of question often but anyway here goes.

I have been trying to decide on which camera to buy and have whittled my choice down to 2 possible

I am an amateur looking for an entry level but a camera I will be happy with once more confident and after some lessons.

Mostly motorsport (panning) but obviously all types of photography will need to be covered.

My 2 choices so far are the Sony A380 + 18-55 lens £489. or the Pentax KX+ 18-55 lens £499.

Now then I’m swaying towards the Sony because it seems to have more of the features I think I would need i.e. quick AF, scene selection and anti shake together with a host of functions for an amateur having lessons. Also in the review I have read it says this a good camera for capturing fast moving objects.

The Pentax seems to be almost as good but I’m not sure if it would be as amateur friendly, however it does have HD movie mode which although possibly frowned upon seem to be a pretty cool extra feature.

I have looked at the Cannon 450D +18-55 lens but this is more money and again I’m note sure if this is amateur friendly.

Thanks for reading, all advice appreciated

Derek

there's nothing wrong with any of the cameras you mention Derek, including the 450D which is just as friendly as the others. Standard answer is pop into a local shop to try them and see which you feel most comfortable with :)

The only thing I'd say is see if you can find a kit with something a bit longer than 55mm, for motorsport you're going to struggle a bit with such a short lens.

Oh, and welcome to the forums :)

Well I think I’ve decided on my new camera. Had a look/feel at both the Sony A380 and the Pentax Kx and almost straight away I felt happier with the Pentax. It seemed smaller than the Sony and easier to hold.
It has a host of features and seems great even for an amateur like me, however it is technical enough for me to learn with and use when I manage to find somewhere local to take a course.

I aim to use the camera mostly for sport/motorsport photography and it seems very capable of this plus the added bonus of high quality movie mode.

So watch this space and hopefully I will be able to post some interesting shots soon.

I would like also to say a big thank you to Harpers Photography in Woking who were very helpful and patient.

Cheers

Derek

Thats great news, best advice I was given when I started off was to go and have a play around and see which felt the nicest etc, I hope you enjoy it and a  to Harpers Photography in Woking - seems like you've found a good shop there
