Ok, i feel like upgrading my camera, its a 350D, so i keep looking at used 30D and i did ask before on here if it would be a good upgrade to which i got a positive response, but im unsure why?

Im sure its down to just not knowing but form paper i see its the same Digic II processor, only 0.2mp more.

Benefits on paper are, 2 more fps, but i dont really ever use that function on my 350d, it does have the bigger screen which i do want, and picture styles?

So..is it realy much of an upgrade, i know its not all down to the camera, but am i likly to be able to get better images from it? or will the upgrade be just the stronger case and label?

Hope you can help, thanks.
Andy

I went from a 350d to a 40d, so not too far awy from what you are considering.

The 40d is nicer, easier to use and feels way more robust, however I can't put my hand on my heart and say that the images are way better. That's not to say that the upgrade wasn't worth it - it definitely was, but for reasons other than image quality.

Whilst I had the 350d I went from the kit lens to a 24-105; now that made a huge difference to image quality.

For better images upgrade the glass over the body everytime unless there is a specific reason to up grade the body (ie, fps).

I found just the usability of the xxD series to be worth it and the ruggedness. Ie the focus points can be selected from the multi stick. The extra iso settings, the Beefier batteries and the response is quicker. If you wait till my 30 day period is finished I have a 30d that will be going cheap. Please don't think that the info was touting for a sale.

I owned both at the same time, the rationale was to use the 350d to save my 30d 'for best' as it were, in reality what happened was I hardly used the 350d and when I did I hated it, the 30d is more rugged, feels better, has better controls etc... I still miss the thumb wheel off the back. It's got more focus points, spot metering, bigger screen... I could go on and on, there really is no comparison. I sold my 350d after a short while....

If you shoot RAW picture modes are redundant anyway and I would be shooting RAW to get the best from any camera

I switched from a 300D to a 30D. I don't think switching to a 30D will allow you to take better photos – different lenses or lighting is more likely to do that – but it is more convenient and pleasurable to use thanks to better controls, bigger screen etc.

I went from a 300D to a 20D with a 10D for a short while too and I don't think that the picture quality improved to any measurable degree, if at all.

I think that the only real differences that might matter will be ergonomic and that it's therefore your decision which feels and handles the best and if changing is worthwhile.

Thanks for info guys, helped me make my mind up. And yes i shoot raw.

amtaylor, whats this 30 day period? and whats cheap?

Thanks
Andy

Sorry for late reply, I can't post items for sale in the trade section until I have been a member for 30 days but I will be selling it for £250.

It depends how you define image quality. Is it better if you shoot exactly the same object, on a tripod with the same settings. Not really. But it is better when you get the shot that the other camera just couldn't get.

"But it is better when you get the shot that the other camera just couldn't get."

Well, obviously, but my point was that it's a personal decision as although the cameras have different controls and layout who is to say which is best? There are also technical differences but some may be irrelevant to individual users. For example I take shots in excess of 1/4000 sec so a xxD is better than a xxxD for me but not everyone cares that the xxD is limited to 1/4000. On the other hand things that many seem to care about include magnesium and frame rate but I couldn't care less about these things.

Which is best and if the financial cost of changing bodies from xxxD to xxD is justified is a personal decision.

That's true but the original post asked if it was likely the upgrade would produce better images and if a poll was done between people that had upgraded and asked if they had better shots with the xxD i think the majority would say yes. So the answer is better shots are more likely with the upgrade. I would never go back to a xxxD even as a backup whether for portraits, wildlife, travel or any form because it's just that much more efficient at what it does. Of course it is a personal decision but unless your shooting constantly in a controlled environment where time is not a factor you will see and feel a noticeable difference.

"That's true but the original post asked if it was likely the upgrade would produce better images"

And I gave my opinion in my first reply. My second post was more in response to you as you quoted me...

Ok ok ok. Damn forums and opinions! Ok well from what how i now see it is, technically there are better options, if i would use them thats unsure, but the fact that it has feels better and higher quality etc may help me towards getting better images that the 350 techinally could do.

Im not to sure what to do, its on of them things really, the only main problem i have (apart from money:bang:) is the i dont feel held back by the 350d i know its old now and being honest, my only real gripe is the screen size, many many times i have checked shots after and thought to be at least ok, and they look good, but when taken off, there not keepers. And i know its hard to tell anyway, even maybe on a 2.5inch screen, but on a low res 1.8inch it seems pointless it being there.

So... a 350D with a bigger screen seems my answer! lol, which i soppose a 30D fits the bill?

Andy

Yea, i keep looking at the 40d's but they seem a good £100 - £150 more, and i unfortunatly cant step that much higher, which makes me think do i wait and save, but also think... again, has it got features on it that the 30d hasnt, that i would benefit from?

Thanks
Andy
