Hi All. Been having problems updating windows on IE8. Keep getting error code 80072efd. Done the usual what it says on the problem page ie: turn off firewall and retry etc. Still no joy. Also tried downloading malware from links on other threads and get "cannot connect the page". My laptop is running on vista.:help::help:

Cheers Dave :bang::bang:

Hi Dave.
Download spybot onto a memory stick on another machine, copy across and install, then boot up in safe mode and run spybot.

That should knock anything nasty on the head in one swoop.

I hope you're not trying to download malware as you say but are attempting to download anti-malware products. In any event, forget them. Even if you did have malware, which I doubt, they rarely do any good.

If you have problems accessing sites from which you could usually obtain help and assistance then I would say yes, you do have a trojan.

But I doubt if this is the case here. There is a known issue with MS updates as well as messenger connections that result with this error code.

Google the code and there is lots of help out there. Ignore the fixes that relate to messenger and you'll soon be up and running.

The error code 80072efd on Windows Update means that the servers have to much load on them, just try again later.

Sure I've seen that somewhere. As well download AVG and run a virus scan.

Hi Martyn. Tried for 2weeks now, think its abit deeper than that also have got AVG. Thanks for the reply though. Think I might have to spend money now and get somebody to look at it.:'(:'(

Regards Dave

I thought this error code was to do with the recent mcafee updates that thought the svchost.exr was a virus and caused some issues?
i think to fix it, you need a mcafee patch to update the original update and that will then fix the

Hi Gareth. Thanks but that seems to be a fault with XP. I'm on Vista
Also I have not got Mcafee. I've got AVG.

Cheers Dave

Hi smooth. Done what you said but it wouldn't allow me to run it:bang:
Cheers Dave

In Vista do you have to run this as an administrator? On Windows 7 I can right-click on it and select run as administrator.

Also try Adaware and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Both are available free.

I run all three (Sbybot, Adaware and Mawarebytes) fairly often alongside my antivirus software.

Would this help.

Windows Update error 80072efd

If you receive Windows Update error 80072efd while checking for updates, the cause might be a high number of update requests on the Windows Update servers. Close Windows Update, wait 10 to 15 minutes, and then run Windows Update again. You can also wait for Windows Automatic Update to run at its next scheduled time.

If you continue to receive this error, it might mean that a program running on your computer is preventing Windows Update Services (SVCHOST) from accessing the Internet. Programs that might do this include firewalls, anti-spyware software, web accelerators, Internet security or antivirus programs, and proxy servers.

To correct the problem, you might need to add the Windows Update website addresses to the blocking program's exceptions or "allow" list or allow Windows Update Service to connect to the Internet through port 80 and port 443.

Hi poacher Yeh done that no good. Thanks

if it does do that follow my instructions in here:
http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=216666&highlight=hosts

and copy/paste in the contents of the host file for us to see

Hi Neil. think this is what you need
# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost

Shouldn't think Java would cause something like this to happen although stranger things have happened but it's a long shot.

Ever used HijackThis? Run that and post the log back, will see if we can see anything strange running that could be causing it.
