Help with a magazine Project - Coloured Water drops

I saw this project in Photoplus magazine, and I have been trying to recreate it. With no luck. Could you help me to see what im doing wrong? Am I right in assuming this shot is only do-able with a macro lens? Currently im using an 18-55 stock lens, which for the moment is all I have on my d3100.

Any tips or help on the settings, or how to achieve this shot would be much appreciated. The mag article doesnt describe in detail how to do it..

A macro lens may help, but from these set up shots I don't think it's compulsary.
It will depend on how close your kit lens will focus, you may have to crop the final image.

Try live view to focus - zoom in on the live view and then manual focus on a water drop.

I really like that idea and will give it a go soon but agree you may need some macro kit consider a set of macro tubes

nice idea thanks for posting i will also give this a shot tomorrow with the kit lens to see how i get on. thats if i can find a cd case thats not got way too many scratches on it lol.
