Help With Filters

Hey everyone,

I've just bought my first DLSR, a Nikon D40x off ebay, as well as two lenses it also came with a number of filters. These being a Hama 52mm Polarizing Filter, a Hama 52mm Sky Light Filter, a Sonia 52mm Macro filters x 4, Macro, +1, +2, +4, a Cokin Style filters with 52mm mount. also includes a Blue, Grad Blue, Grad pink, Red, Grad Red, Grad Orange, ND, ND2, ND4, and Orange.

I havent recieved the camera yet, am waiting for it through the post, but was wondering what each of these filters do? Does anyone have any examples of them in use on a photograph?

Thanks for that, and thank you for the link, when I did do a google search I couldn't find anything myself.
 
haha thank you, makes me look really incompetent now!

Think the best thing for me to do is to fiddle and play with them and work out what they do that way :)
