Help with lights...

I'm now the proud owner of some 160w Elemental lights. Without a manual.

I know about stopping lights down, etc, but the lights just have a dial with '1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16' on - I'm guessing this relates to power - how do I translate it to stops?
 
You dont as such... Basically thats the power of the light... so at "1" it will be the full 160w of light
"1/2" will be 80w and so on...

Each one (1, 1/2, 1/4 etc) is a Stop of light, so you find your exposure for say 1/4 and then adjust the Apertue with the increase or decrease of the power setting from your flash head.

hope that makes sense and thats my understanding.
 
You use a lightmeter!!!!!

You have a website that quotes (very cheap) PRICES and you're asking how to use your lights?! Another example of what gives professionals a bad name!
 
Hey, previously I've been doing NATURAL LIGHT and OUTDOORS successfully and studio shots with pretty much already set up lights. I've now got my own lights to progress my business. And the low prices are because I'm starting out to get business.

I understand how to use lights with STOPS on the digital readout - that's what the studio I use has. But these lights have the fractions on - hence the 'how do I translate these into stops?'

How hard is that? Low prices starting out = low prices forever.
 
There's loads of stuff out there to read up if you google for it. Keep the prices UP or you'll regret it later. :thumbs:

Those are stops. A 'stop' is either halving or doubling the amount of light, so for example 1/8 to 1/16 is one stop.

Same as 1/125sec to 1/250sec is one stop, and f/4 to f/5.6 is one stop, and ISO 200 to ISO 400 is one stop.

The relationship between f/numbers doesn't look like halving/doubling, but it is. It's just that the multiplication factor that's used is the square root of 2, ie 1.41, so 4 x 1.41 = 5.6

That's how you can mix and match f/number and shutter speeds to get the same exposure but with different effects. Forgive me if you already know this.
