Just discovered that HDR is what I need - but how to start ?
I've a Mac (OSX 10.5.6) with Photoshop Elements 3 for Mac but can't afford full Photoshop.
Suggestions please.

Welcome to TP. A hell of a lot has been written on HDR and the best tutorial around can be found by Googling "hdr tutorial" which will tell you that you don't need Photoshop. I'm surprised that you did feel it was needed given most HDR shots are produced with Photomatix from HDRSoft. I'm curious as to why you've just discovered that its what you need. What do you need it for?

Free trial download, which just adds a little text at the bottom of each image.

The download link is about 2/3 of the page down.

Dynamic-PHOTO HDR OSX (46 MB)
This is a trial version for Intel-Based OSX. Tiger (10.4.x) and Leopard (10.5.x)

A rubbish image, but just to show the text add by the trial version
