Hitech 85/Cokin P ND Grad on Canon 10-22 lens - enough room to adjust the filter?

Hi -

I am looking for opinions from people who have actually tried the hitech 85 ND Grad (or i guess cokin p series nd grad) filters in conjunction with a Canon 10-22mm lens. I know that even with the wide angle filter holder i will get vignetting from 10-12mm. This question is not about that.

Since one needs to move the nd grad filter up and down to get the effect to be on the right part of the scene and the filter ring is 77mm there does not seem to be a huge amount of room to move an 85 size filter. Is this an issue in practical usage though? Have you found yourself frustrated at not being able to move the filter more (i.e. do you wish you had gone for 100mm instead)?

Thanks,
Dub

I use the hitech 85mm with a sigma 10-20mm. The 85mm filters have a height of 110mm so I have not had a problem with adjusting.
Do I wish I had went for 100mm?
Yes. mainly because of vignetting though.

Are you using the wide angle holder? If so at what focal length does vignetting disappear?

I'm actually using a cut down 3 filter holder. I can use from 14mm without problems.

Sweet! Thanks for the great info :) It's just what I needed to know.
I'm going with p series and 85 size filters due to the costs involved in going higher. If I really find I am getting in to using filters a lot then I will invest in Lee.

Thanks again mate.
