FIXER
Photographic materials that have been printed-out or developed to create a visible image are susceptible to continued reduction of silver unless the unexposed silver halides are completely removed. This clearing process is called fixing. Without fixing, all silver-based photographic materials would eventually darken. The first recorded attempts to fix a photographic image were by Hercules Florence in 1833. According to his journals, Florence kept his printed-out silver chloride images on paper from fading by treating them in a solution of urine, ammonia being the active ingredient. His research, conducted in Brazil, went unnoticed.

The pyrocatechol in urine works as a developer rather than a fixer.

Never heard of using onions but I have done coffee with washing soda and I have heard of rosemary extract being used rosemaric acid and caffeic acid are very closely related believe it or not. Orange juice can work too.

For a simple developer, you need an acid which is then buffered to be alkaline.

Not sure about a home made fixer though other than hypochlorite for swimming pool and aquarium use.

A single bath developer and fixer perhaps!!
