Hood confused

ok this is a new one on me as ive never had lens hoods for aslong as ive been taking photos but i got one for xmas it arrived today its the ew-83j for my 17-55 2.8 canon what i need to know is are the red dots supposed to align? the red dots i refer to are the one on the front of the lens and on the back of the hood sorry about the bad iphone photos to help with this. the hood at the min is the long petals are at 12 and 6 o clock

You align the red dots to match up lens and hood and then twist on.

ok now the writing on the hood is on the bottom? the red dor on the lens is now aligned with the red O on the hood. btw i feel so silly asking this lol

Yes that's correct. You can of course mount it at 180 degrees so the writing is on the top.
