I'm about to put my first site together and I'm looking at hosting.

What do other people with business sites here pay per month?
My site will be a fairly simple affair to start with. HTML written site with a front page including a slide show, about, contact, portfolio and pricing pages also.

I was recommended to use uk2.net by a friend and looking at their packages here ---> http://www.uk2.net/web-hosting/
I'm thinking the home level would be more than enough for my first site.

Can anyone give me their opinion?

Thanks.

I would strongly advise against UK2, they're all goody goody when everything is going fine but wait till you have a problem. It's all done by email and in their time unless you wish to pay the £1.50p per min technicial helpline. Have a look on their website and see if you can find out how to leave them, they make it very hard and often apply charges if you have not been with them long enough.

I'm with http://www.tsohost.co.uk/ now and I'm very happy with them.

Price isn't everything with these companies as many on here will confirm the true test is in their response when things go wrong and your site is down.

The level of support from Tsohost is remarkable for any business but extremely remarkable for a hosting company!

Thanks for all the quick replies. :thumbs:

Ill avoid UK2 then.

I think cost at the level I'm looking at only differs by a few £'s a month at most so not really an issue.
I'll look into TSO Host now.

Would these lower cost hosting packages allow me to create an area for a client to view their images with password access?

Whats the term for such a requirement?

You may be better off starting out with a website template. You could be up and running quite cheaply in days rather than years if you are thinking writing your own html website is an option :runaway:

Wordpress could be an option as it is all very easily laid out in the control panel and a doddle to use.

This is true... Getting client galleries working with Wordpress can be interesting though, as it doesn't (by default) accept password protected galleries UNLESS they're created from within Wordpress (assuming it still doesn't anyway, it never did with the 2.* series - 3.* might be different)

Thanks guys ill have a look at Wordpress now:thumbs:

Anyone used Drupal? It seems to be a similar thing.

Thanks again all.

I'm going to dl wordpress and have a play now.

Another question, this time around domain registration. I almost registered my domain last night on 123reg but it was asking what the domain use would be for. Do all of the registration sites ask this? It was along the lines of, personal/sole trader/limited company/charity etc, does it really matter what I put, I can't think of the reason why they would need to know?

If you're running a personal website you can hide your address through the registration process, and if someone runs a whois search at some point it'll show as hidden.

If its a business domain then you should show a registered address for the site

I got the client area to work but it's a little awkward to login in my opinion. If you want to try it out send me a pm and I will give you some access details to try it :thumbs:

Yes please CGeezer.

I now have the login section sorted out and am going to look into separate client login pages today.

if you click on the top left section the Marmite bottle and try to view you will have no access. Then login as

user = user1
password = test

I also added all my flickr stream backed up by Gallery2 but it is only a small link at the top right of the main page. Loving Wordpress plugins.

will update through the day so the site could go missing sporadically.
