HOw do I transfer Time Machine back up to another HD?

I have a 500G WD External HD that is my Time Machine backup, but its gotten kinda full. I am going to get a 1.5TB drive and replace it. The question is how do i transfer everything to the new HD and keeping everything running as it is now.
 
I'm not 100% on this but I think you hook up the new HD, let the mac create a time machine partition and then copy and paste the directory structure from the 500gb drive across. But I'll let someone else confirm if I'm right or wrong.
 
I'm not 100% sure. But how about if the 500GB is harddrive E: for example and 1.5TB is harddrive F:. Why not transfer it all to the new one, and then unplug the first and tell F: you want it to be E: and then all the files will be allocated as they normally would, as all of your programmes are looking for it in E:
