How do you loosen a zoom lens?

Hey guys and girls,

My dad dropped my Nikon 18-135mm (kit) lens onto the solid wood floor yesterday... IQ wise its fine, the aperture ring inside is fine - to be honest you wouldnt have known its been dropped on the floor except that now zooming is really hard and inprecise.

Is there a way to take it apart and adjust how loose the lens is to zoom?

I've thought about sending it to Nikon but its really just not worth it considering its only a £100 lens. I dont really think its worth buying another when theres better lenses for a similar price on the market, but its a nice low risk walkabout lens so if theres anyone who knows how to open it up and adjust it, that would be awesome.

Regards, James

Don't think adjustment is the answer, even if possible.
I reckon that lens is damaged.

Agreed. If the zoom was fine before but, after being dropped, it's stiff, then something's broken.

Awh thats dissapointing :( - is there not some sort of extending mechanism inside lenses that it may have just jumped slightly? Ive had a google and not found any solid results on loosening the zoom but I wouldve thought itd be in some way possible :s

Drop it again and see what happens and then get Dad to cough up for a new nicer one

sounds like the threads are compacted or off alignment.
you might be able to wiggle them back into sync but I doubt it...I assume the threads are quite precise

Hey guys,

Cheers for the responses - I attempted taking the lens apart earlier and got past all the circuitry but it just seems like a never ending wall of plastic and glass!

Im now hoping I can claim it on the house insurance and get a new one..
