How good/bad is the Canon 7D at high ISO?

I really, really want a 5D mkll, both for its high ISO capabilities and the fact that my 24mm lens will be just that and not a 35mm equivalent (if you get my drift), but even at Kerso's prices, I'm struggling to justify it. Given that I have been perfectly happy with a crop sensor all my photographic life, would I be better off with a 7D's versitility? I can't see the point in going to a 60D as I gain nothing of interest to me and I definitly can't afford a 1D mk 4.
I shoot just about anything except portrait/wedding work (ugh!) and often shoot gigs in absolutely awful lighting conditions. I have seen amazing shots that prove what the 5D can do at high ISO (although I accept its the photographers use of it that really counts), but have yet to see what a 7D can do in identical situations.

Can anyone help?


PS...any idea if there is a 5d mklll on the horizon?

7D is not that much better than your 40D :( 5D2 is :thumbs: From what you've said, I honestly think you'd be disappointed with a 7D, despite the fact that it is fantastic in many ways. Great for birding and long lens action, but it's only got a small sensor. Whereas you'll be delighted with a 5D2, because it's got a big sensor. And it's not that much more money.

Of course the 5D2 will be replaced, and there are always rumours. Who knows when? Personally, I'm not sure it will be called the 5DMkIII, but will be very special indeed and quite a bit more expensive - like well over £2k.
 
I can only say that I have just taken delivery of my 7D. There was lots of mixed comment before I bought it, but now I have it I am really very pleased.

I haven't had a chance to go out with it too much yet, but just with the few shots I've taken, its clearly a huge improvement, but then I'm going from a 10D to 7D

I'm the same as you, I've been happy with a crop sensor for years, and the difference in price between a 7D and the 5D2 just made me think it wasn't worth it for me.

Its a lovely camera, and although I have a lot to learn I just know its going to live up to my expectations
 
Its all subjective anyway imo. One persons useable/fine is anothers 'omfgbbqwtflolyouchargeforthats***?'

Thoes who have used ISO3200 film will think ISO3200 on a 7D is brilliant. My opinion is, up to 3200 is fine, anything above is pretty ****. Its pretty similar to the 5D2 up to 1600 as well imo.
 
I've always thought the 7D is similar to the D300, as is the 5D II to the D700, my D300 is acceptable to about iso1000 but i wouldn't be happy going higher, the 7D as too is a crop sensor might be able to just go to iso1600 ?
 
I've read that the 60D is a little better than the 7D and suffers from less banding.

Personally the 60D and it's articulated screen appeal to me more than the features of the 7D.
 
5d3 should be 12-18 months hopefully :D


the 7d is awesome for high iso, kinda sucky at low iso but newer ones are meant to be better so it could have just been a firmware thing (the 50d was)

I used 7d for almost 6 months and absolutely loved it particularly the AF, but that was until I used the 5d Mk ii. The low light/night shots shot handheld on high iso on the 5d were class apart with hardly any noise at iso 1600. the image on 7d starts getting quite grainy on iso 800.

Since then I cant bring myself to use the 7d
 
A 5DII will produce images up to ISO 12800 that will blow your mind, and leaves the 7D behind at ISO 800 when it comes to noise, its also much better on colour reproduction, then there's the nice depth of field from a FF sensor compared to the crop and the fact that all your lenses are what they say they are.

Downsides are slower and less accurate autofocus, less AF points, older metering system

I had a look at one today and.. damn.. now I want one!!! but by the time I can save/sell kidney/sell testicle to get one the MKIII should be out.

If the new one has all the features on the 7D but with the good bits from the MKII then there's going to be a glut of kidneys going cheap I think.

If a potential 5D mk4 had all the best bits of a 7D and a 1D mk4 combined...boy that would be some camera!!! Think I'll settle for a 5Dmk2 now though.
