How good is the Canon 35mm L f/1.4 for macro?

I was just curious if that lens is good for taking macro shots?

Was just wondering because the Canon 50mm L f/1.2 wasn't so good when you got too close :p, unlike the 50mm f/1.8 which seemed to be a lot better at taking macro shots.

You're using a 5DII?

I'd have thought that a macro lens of 80mm+ would suit you better?

Canon do a 50mm f2.5 "macro" but as far as I know it isn't really macro (only does x0.5) and just focus's a bit closer than usual for a 50mm. Other than that something between 80 and 150mm might make a bit more sense than 35mm?

Why are you looking at 35mm for macro?

Well, I want to use it as an all-rounder, not specifically for macro. I just wanted to know how good it was at focusing close up.

As an all round lens it'll probably be lovely if a little wide. I have the Sigma 30mm f1.4 on my camera at the moment and I like it as a "standard" lens but I'm using an APS-C and if you are using a full frame 5DII maybe the Canon 50mm f2.5 "macro" might be worth a look? I have one and it's a nice general purpose lens and can focus close, 0.23m / 0.8 feet according to Canon.

Wider lenses tend to be able to focus pretty close, the specification for the 35mm f1.2 says that the closest focus distance is 0.3m / 1 foot.

Apart from being far too wide, it's not going to be great at macro distances.

Think 100mm at least for macro on a 5D2, probably the 180mm L even better.
