Yes
So today at Duxford and I finally start to see the paper gasket thingy shredding and falling out the back of the slide. This is my favourite lens but now that the seasons over won't be getting much use. Whats the general opinion do I send it back to Canon and how much am I looking at?

I'm not a CPS member by the way.

My gasket went too in 2012
Canon were doing a fixed price service (think they still are )so got them to give it a clean and check calibration as well
Can't remember how much it was tho:)

I think it would be better off being sent into Canon for a fix, it's a lot of moneys worth to risk it going wrong at a critical moment. I didn't keep my 100-400 for long enough for it to happen but I would of sent it in asap.

Send it to Canon it's the friction ring breaking up.

Standard fix last time I heard was £167

Is it out of warranty ?

The 100-400 is on Canon's fixed price service list. I have a copy of the list dated 1st March 2013, and so far as I know it's still current. The price of any repairs to the 100-400 is £182.50.

Thanks for the replies. I sent an email off to a Colchester Camera Repair - a Canon repair center listed on the Canon website and got this response:

Thank you for your query.

To supply and fit a replacement friction ring only, will be £40 labour, £28
part, plus VAT and postage. To service, calibrate, clean, check and replace the
friction ring will be £130 labour, £28 part, plus VAT and postage.

If you would like to send your equipment to us, please include your details, a
description of the fault and a copy of this email.

It is advisable to have the parcel insured whilst in transit, which would be
Royal Mail special delivery or similar

Think I'll give them a try unless anyone has any horror stories?!

I have always used the N London (Elstree) service centre and been very happy.

Mine went about a year ago & I've just carried on using it.
It doesn't cause me any trouble & doesn't seem any worse for it.
